My Natural Hair Journey

By Brooklyn Duncan

"I was hesitant to go natural..."

I'm fifteen and a sophomore in high school who, like many, was afraid to go natural. I got my first relaxer when I was six and began my natural hair journey November 2015 and the transition wasn't as difficult as I though it would be.

I had been going to Ms. Shassity for about eight months before she convinced me that the only way to stop my hair from breaking off was to go natural. I was hesitant to go natural because I had no clue what my natural hair looked like and I didn't know what to expect. I had no problem with my relaxed hair, I was happy with my length and texture until it began to break off for no apparent reason. So I eventualIy stopped getting relaxers and began to get my hair trimmed more often.

I continued to flat iron my hair because I couldn't find a protective style that I liked (And I wasn't quite ready for those puffy edges!). After watching a ton of you tube videos about styling natural hair and taking care of it, I decided I wasn't going to put heat on my hair for the entire summer.

I asked Ms. Shassity, aunts, cousins and anyone else I could find about how they cared for their hair, but it was still hard to find products that worked for me because my hair was extremely dry. I began co-washing once a week and using the Shea Moisture Anti-Breakage strengthening Masque along with Olive Miracle moisturizing lotion and coconut oil to keep my hair from getting too dry. For my protective style, I had someone teach me how to French braid and I did that on one side and a bun at the top. I used a spray bottle filled with water and a little conditioner to keep my hair moist while I was braiding my hair and avoided unnecessary breakage by using a wide tooth comb. My hair is thicker and healthier than its ever been! I have no regrets and I'll never get a relaxer again! :)
